This album compiles some of the highlights of the Inferno project, released to mark the 700th anniversary of Dante's Divine Comedy.

The album's tracklisting takes you on a journey through Dante's Inferno, from the Earth's surface at the beginning, down to Satan at the end, meeting all kinds of sinners and demons along the way.

The Inferno project features more than 80 artists from all over the world creating brand new compositions based on individual cantos from the Inferno, and can be viewed in full at citiesandmemory.com/inferno

The project uses the ways in which Inferno inspired more than 80 artists all over the world to bring a sonic dimension to this incredible work - a companion soundtrack to the journey through Dante’s Hell.

One of the most striking features about the Inferno is the frequent references to sound and noise, and we really wanted to bring this to life, using the sound design, sampling and composition techniques of 2020 to celebrate 700 years of a work of art that has changed the face of literature.

Normally I go to Steve Roach albums to experience time less linearly, so to speak, but here we have an album that's structured almost like a conventional one, with tracks that are distinct from each other. We get pure ambience, gentle tribal rhythms, and glimpses of piano, all building towards a breathtaking final pair of tracks in which Roach sets aloft a full-throated melodicism that's new to me in his oeuvre. fyeahmetal
