Stephanie Merchak - Remnants (Schwäbisch Gmünd)

about

German musical clock reimagined by Steph Merchak.

"The picture I have of future cities is noise and chaos.

"To translate this into sound, I decided to deconstruct the recording of the musical clock in Schwäbisch Gmünd Market Square. The piece starts with a drone pad that brings a layer of cold dystopian future. This pad was made from scratch using Operator and various Ableton Live effects.

"Four instances of the original recording were stacked. They were stretched up to 10 times their length and pitch shifted independently. The Max4Live Granulator device was used to transform one additional instance of the original recording into grains.

"Additional chaos was achieved by using envelopes on various parameters.

The piece ends with the deconstructed elements from the original recording disappearing in reverb as if any remnants from the city as we know it was vanishing forever."
