about

This album is a collection of some of the highlights from across the Cities and Memory project over the last 12 months, showing off some of the amazing diversity of creative approaches our contributing artists have shown over the year.

It’s free to download or available on a pay-what-you-like basis, so please do download it, listen and share widely – we’d love as many people as possible to hear these amazing compositions and field recordings.

This year’s collection is a special one, featuring two amazing vocal songs made from the sounds of a hot air balloon and a buzzing soundscape of insects respectively. There’s a piece framed by the poetry of a 97-year-old, and a spoken word soundscape built from a political protest.

You can listen to the memory of the golden light of summers spent in Italy recreated in music, or an electronica piece built from the sound of sizzling dosas cooking in India.

Take a trip to the main station in Porto, the Hallgrimskirkja in Reyjavik.

Sit right next to the runway at Gatwick Airport, visit Paris in the springtime or take a moment in silent reverence at the Western Wall in Jerusalem.

It’s all right here on Sounds of the Year 2023 – and this was how our year sounded.
