Lucy Cathcart Frödén with Anneleen Lindsay and Ali Jehad - A glance, a footstep, a shiver

about

The ‘obsolete sound’ I used was a recording of the mechanism of an Agfa Billy medium format camera: a series of shutter clicks and each subsequent winding on of the film. Reflecting on the potential of a photograph to somehow slow down time, or at least preserve a moment in time, I decided to experiment with slowing down the audio file. This unpacked the staccato clicks of the shutter into a more intricate mechanical chronology, and by using a microphaser to spread the sound, it took on a kind of shimmery, otherworldly quality.

I invited two photographer friends to collaborate on the piece: Anneleen Lindsay and Ali Jehad. They each recorded some reflections on their own practice, and on the medium of photography more generally. These thoughtful and personal spoken word elements are interwoven with the camera sounds, with the final addition of a slow arpeggiated chord progression to add a little additional colour and a sense of movement.
