Keira Simmons - Stirring (Botswana)

from Music for Sleep by Cities and Memory

/

about

“Stirring” explores the process of waking as the sun rises. Recently I’m trying to shift my circadian rhythm and wake up early each day, and in seeking ways to wake my brain up gently I have found that (of course) music is the answer. For this project I wanted to create a track I would happily set as my alarm, to rouse my brain and senses as I resist the day.

I created instruments from the recording using granular synthesis an arpeggiated sampler to highlight the elements of Antoniadou’s original field recording that I find most delightful (the insects and frog chorus), then imitated the recording’s stippled quality using arpeggiated synths and gentle drums. With quick stereo and binaural panning to provide enough sonic interest that the listener is engaged but not overstimulated, “Stirring” could also soundtrack a short nap or meditation.
