We were drawn to the sound of the Grinder’s Whistle – it was subtle with a distant, organic quality. It came through like it could have been a bird call. This stood out when compared to the other obsolete sounds which were primarily machines and gadgets.

This was the sound of a person continuing an age-old trade in their local community. Because of that, we wanted to accompany this call with a work that was equally warm and flowed as if it was also wandering the local street.

We used analogue beats and effects-drenched guitar, accompanying a field recording of birds close to home. We played ‘in-the-moment’ with open windows to invite a capture of immediate surrounding life. The Grinder’s Whistle appears in entirety twice in the piece – at other times there are glimpses layered throughout. We encourage intimate listening through headphones…
